Spam in your referral logs
April 29, 2003
Rats! I’ve chosen to remove the “Show Referrers” script and accompanying display page from my site. It’s too bad, because it was kind of fun to see who was stopping off in their travels. Lo and behold, I found out a few minutes ago that this too can be spammed and that this could display some rather interesting though quite predictable results. It’s a rather annoying set back, but not surprising considering the number of pop-ups and other annoying crap that fills my computer(s) every day. If Lucas, or anyone else with a talent for programming, has any suggestions or alternatives, I would be interested in hearing them.
That’s one thing paper had going for it - the “No junk-mail please” sign taped to the mailbox almost always did the trick.
*Update - I guess i’m out of the loop. It looks like this has been around for a while and I was lucky enough to avoid it until now. More from: Wired; Metafilter; kasia; and illuminent.com.
BTW - The script for displaying URL referrals was originally found at etc.
