“Why the Masses Love Metadata: Tagging, Folksonomy and the Amateur Expert”
October 3, 2006
I had a great time this morning doing a talk for the “Tech Tuesdays: Talking with Techies” webcast series, hosted by the wonderful Education Institute and the equally wonderful Darlene Fichter. It was great to see a strong turnout for the topic and a lot of interest in what metadata for non-librarians was all about. I’ve posted the slides to BDW (a mere 12.9 mb; PPT) if non-attendees are interested in finding out what was covered. The session details for “Why the Masses Love Metadata” are still up on the EI site if you want to look before committing to the download (sorry about the file size, folks. I prefer imagery to dense text. What can I say?).
:: Sidebar: I’ve long ago shaved off my beard, which I’m proudly wearing in my presenters pic on the EI site. I’ve exchanged the Chewbacca look for a much more civilized goatee. How long it lasts as a goatee depends on how cold our Canadian winter gets. If you see me at a conference looking like Gandalf or Kenny Rogers circa 1978, you’ll know it’s a frosty one back home in Edmonton. That, or you will know that is is time to lay off the free vendor booze because you’ve just mistaken me for Peter Binkley. [Peter: Not that you look *anything* like Kenny Rogers circa 1978. Frankly, you could never pull off a duet with Dolly Parton singing “OpenURLs in the stream. That is what we are. And we belong with each other. Uh huh…”.]

Geoff, perhaps you’d better lie down for a moment. Take the weight off. There, that feels much better , doesn’t it?

Great presentation, Geoff. I can almost hear your voice just paging through it!

Thanks, Chris. Perhaps that will be my inspiration to start podcasting…
I hope you and the crew are having a good time in Fiji. Good to hear from you! I was just lookign through some of your Flickr pics the other day. Nice place!
